Homelessness support
Tang Hall SMART is currently leading on a city-wide strategy to implement the recommendations of this research for the benefit of the city.
“KICKSTART”, which we set up in 2016, is Tang Hall Smart’s intensive support programme for people who have experienced homelessness and who want to work, even if this seems far away in the future. We offer job coaching and key working to people who have fallen through the cracks in society and need extra help, specifically those suffering from homelessness, addiction and complex needs. We also run a series of interventions alongside this programme, focusing on and to encourage expression and creativity.
We work in collaboration with Tang Hall Employment, to offer long-term support to people to people who have experienced homelessness and who also have a
goal of getting some paid work at some point.

Tang Hall Employment is a charity providing employabilty support in York UK, for people facing significant barriers to finding employment. We focus on supporting employment for people either with long term experience of addiction/mental health (in particular where this has led to homelessness) - or where a person has a learning disability.

OUR RESEARCH INTO HOMELESSNESS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK
'An ambitious collaboration between Tang Hall SMART CIC and the University of York, launched in early 2024. The project brings together a powerful mix of academic insight, lived experience, and community practice. It responds to a pressing challenge: how do we strengthen and unify the invaluable work of non-statutory services in a way that could meet the needs of people experiencing homelessness'.
Our work is informed by the research Connecting the Dots which was carried out by The University of York and Tang Hall SMART between 2023 to 2025, and which is a thought-provoking insight into lived experience perspectives.
